Why Visit Shirahama
Shirahama is a seaside resort town on Wakayama Prefecture's Pacific coast, celebrated for its 640-metre arc of powdery white sand that rivals any tropical beach. The sand at Shirarahama Beach was historically so prized that it has been referenced in Japanese poetry for over 1,300 years — making this one of the country's oldest resort destinations.
Beyond the beach, Shirahama is a serious onsen town. Volcanic hot springs dot the coastline, including the open-air Sakino-yu bath perched on seaside rocks where bathers soak just metres from crashing waves. The dramatic Sandanbeki cliffs and caves, the layered rock formation at Senjo-jiki, and the nearby Adventure World theme park (home to giant pandas) give the area a surprising depth of attractions.
Best Time to Visit
Summer (July – August) — Peak beach season with warm water and lively atmosphere. The beach opens for swimming from late June through early September.
Spring (March – May) — Mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and stunning coastal scenery. Perfect for cliff walks and onsen visits.
Autumn & Winter — Quieter months ideal for hot spring soaking. Sakino-yu oceanside bath is especially atmospheric with autumn winds and winter sunsets.
Insider Tips
- Visit Sakino-yu onsen at sunset for an unforgettable experience — admission is just ¥500 and you bathe with the Pacific Ocean at your feet.
- Explore the Sandanbeki Cave by elevator — the underground sea cave was once a hideout for the Kumano Suigun pirates.
- Adventure World is one of the best places in Japan to see giant pandas. Book tickets in advance during weekends and holidays.
- Try the local kuroshio (black current) tuna — Shirahama's proximity to deep Pacific waters means seafood here is exceptionally fresh.
