Matsuyama is Shikoku's largest city and home to Dogo Onsen, one of Japan's oldest hot springs with a history spanning over 3,000 years. The ornate Dogo Onsen Honkan bathhouse, built in 1894, is said to have inspired the magical bathhouse in Hayao Miyazaki's “Spirited Away” — its three-story wooden grandeur remains a working public bath today.
Perched above the city, Matsuyama Castle is one of only 12 original-keep castles surviving in Japan, offering sweeping views over the Seto Inland Sea. The city also has deep literary roots as the setting of Natsume Soseki's beloved novel “Botchan,” and its relaxed atmosphere, tram-lined streets, and superb citrus cuisine make it one of Shikoku's most rewarding destinations.

Spring (March – April) — Cherry blossoms around Matsuyama Castle make it one of Japan's top 100 hanami spots. The castle ropeway ride is magical in full bloom.
Autumn (October – November) — Mild Seto Inland Sea climate and autumn colors in the castle grounds. Mikan citrus season begins, filling markets with Ehime's famous oranges.
Winter (December – February) — The most atmospheric season for soaking at Dogo Onsen. Steam rises against cool evening air as you stroll in yukata through the bathhouse district.
