Why Visit Uchiko
Uchiko is a small town in Ehime Prefecture that prospered during the Meiji era as a centre for Japanese wax production. Its Yokaichi & Gokoku historic district preserves an extraordinary row of merchant houses with cream-coloured plaster walls, dark timber beams, and ornate lattice windows — a streetscape that feels like stepping back to 19th-century rural Japan.
Despite its modest size, Uchiko punches above its weight in cultural offerings. The Uchiko-za kabuki theatre, built in 1916, still hosts performances and is open for visitors to explore its revolving stage and trapdoor mechanisms. The Kamihaga Residence, a former wax merchant's estate, offers an intimate look at the wealth and craftsmanship that the wax trade brought to this mountain valley.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (March – April) — Cherry blossoms along the Oda River and warmer weather make for ideal walking conditions through the historic district.
Autumn (October – November) — Colourful foliage frames Uchiko's traditional architecture. The autumn harvest brings seasonal chestnut and persimmon treats.
Year-round — Uchiko is small enough to enjoy in any season. The indoor theatres and residences provide rainy-day options during the June tsuyu season.
Insider Tips
- Don't miss Uchiko-za theatre — stand on the revolving stage and explore the understage mechanisms that power kabuki special effects.
- The Mokuroza workshop still hand-makes traditional Japanese wax candles using techniques unchanged for generations. Pick one up as a unique souvenir.
- Combine Uchiko with a visit to nearby Ozu, another castle town just 15 minutes away by train, for a full day of Ehime heritage.
- Sample fresh-squeezed mikan (mandarin) juice at stalls near the station — Ehime is Japan's top citrus-producing prefecture.
